Hi, well im pending sale of my 300zx and pendign purchase of a first gen rx7 it still runs and goes but i was told the apex seals will need replaced soon. I only have vague knowledge on rotaries and i went to atkins site and theres so many rebuild kits i dont know what to do or where to go. i plan to just keep it going while i save up to move to a second generation turbo motor. can anybody just enlighten me as to what to do? i live in little rock.

New Apex Seals only cost about $200 but the apex seal springs, side seals & springs, corner seals & springs, oil ring seals & springs, front and rear main seals, lower manifold gasket, oil pan gasket, water pump gasket, & distributor o-ring add up cost when replacing them. Not to mention going ahead and installing new eccentric shaft bearings and resurfacing worn surfaces or replacing worn components. A DIY will cost you about $600-800 to rebuild a 12A. A little more for a 13B if the first gen is a GSL-SE. You can source a 13BT (2nd gen turbo engine) for fairly cheap. I got a Series 5 ('89-'91) out of Dallas for $1300 shipped. That included the engine, transmission, harness, ecu, HKS BOV, intercooler, piping & hoses, driveshaft, air box & HKS filter, MAF, all sensors, fuel pump, turbo, a/c compressor, ps assembly, oil cooler, etc...
I would probably save your money and drive the car until it dies then do the swap. I'm sure Kevin could give you some pointers on the swap. If I remember right everything is straight foward except you will need to source a couple of parts like a '84-'85 GSL-SE 13B front engine cover with motor mounts. I'm unsure about the driveshaft. I think the stock 12A shaft mates to the 13BT tranny with ease. I would read up on it on RX7 Club if you already haven't.

thanks for the reply i pmed kevin and probably will just run it around until it blows lol... im not sure on the year model but i did learn that it has a cracked apex seal and smokes alot but still drives around, its only $500.00 and the body is in good shape.

Are you going to buy another engine? The one in your car still might be salvagable, but will not be if you do drop a seal(well, you'll loose an end plate, mid plate and a rotor housing)

well it depends on how much itd cost to fix the current one (ill know if its a 13b or 12a tomorrow) because i plan to move it to a 13b turbo from a second gen later, but id like to drive the car a bit while im saving for the swap. i had a friend who probably coulda done the work cheap for me but he moved soo yeah lol

'79-'83 = all 12A engines '84-'85 = both 12A & 13B engines (GSL-SE = 13B)

ok its a 12a gsl model. so any ideas on what I should ddo engine wise? 102k miles on it

102k is pretty low mileage for a 12A. I would probably just drive it like it is until you do your swap.
